It's not the longevity, but the quality of life that counts.

In Gloria Stuart's case, she fulfilled both. The legendary actress who became Hollywood's oldest Academy Award acting nominee as Jack's surviving love interest in Titanic, dies at the age of 100.

According daughter Sylvia Thompson, Stuart, whose career spanned more than 70 years, succumbed to respiratory failure on Sunday evening while in her Los Angeles home.

Her daughter adds that the actress had since been diagnosed with lung cancer for five years, not to mention having triumphed over her bout with breast cancer 20 years ago.

Says Thompson, "She did not believe in illness. She paid no attention to it, and it served her well. She had a great life. I'm not sad. I'm happy for her."

Stuart was a stunning blonde whose popularity dominated the 1930's with such films as 'The Invisible Man' and 'Gold Diggers of 1935,' while appearing in B pictures as well. She retired by the mid 1940's and made her comeback in 1970's engaging herself in television and film work.

Yet her star would shine once again as her critically acclaimed performance as 100-year-old Rose in James Cameron 'The Titanic' would receive an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actress.

Her co-star Kate Winslet, who played the younger Rose, was overcome with deep sorrow over the passing away of one of Tinseltown's finest.

"I am saddened to hear of this loss of this remarkable woman," says Winslet. "I feel blessed to have met her, known her and to have acted alongside her. Anyone who spent time in her presence will know what an extraordinary shining light she truly was. She will be deeply missed."

Leonardo DiCaprio, who also starred in 'Titanic,' says Stuart "was a force both on and off screen."

Like the size of the ship itself, Gloria Stuart's death is indeed, a titanic loss to the industry. May you rest in peace.
